poster glued to a wall

2008
To get to a better understanding of the theories on groups, group intelligence and collective thoughts, I used Wikipedia pages on these issues as my starting point. I wanted to visualise how these issues were interrelated. I made a selection of pages, after which relevant fragments were hand copied onto index cards. Using this methodology the research took shape through the act of selecting without following a predetermined path that had been set out beforehand.
I stuck the cards on a wall, clustered by subject, and I followed the Wikipedia link system in order to visualise a part of this intricate network of knowledge. By drawing arrows on the wall the relations between the cards became visible and the separate parts constituted one image. The work creates a non-linear space were one is not directed to read first this and then that. It uses a birds-eye perspective to map something that’s impossible to grasp while you’re in the midst of it.
Wikipedia constantly expands and changes as its content is edited. It resembles a living organism created through the voices of many authors. I froze a fragment of time by hand copying some of its pages and turning it into a life size poster. The poster creates a context for my other works when presented in a constellation.
